Mesjid yang secara sah dibuka pada 2 Februari 2000 ini tercatat sebagai masjid utama kedua yang berada di Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Mesjid ini menawarkan daya pikatnya sebab memiliki format yang mengadopsi pada Masjid Nabawi di Madinah.
Kecuali itu, seperti ditulis dalam komentar ulasan di sebuah web destinasi wisata, pendaran cahaya sang surya karam akan kian menambah eksotisme mesjid yang berlokasi di Teluk Likas.
Menyaksikan video aerial (video menonjol udara) yang diunggah di web Youtube, kelihatan masjid ini mempunyai empat buah menara. Menara masjid ini merekat dengan bangunan utama. Letaknya berada di empat sudut penjuru mata angin. Tetapi, penempatannya agak sedikit berbeda dibandingi masjid pada lazimnya. Keempat menara ini berdiri tak mengelilingi kubah utama mesjid. Melainkan, empat menara ini berada di belakang posisi kubah serta mengitari sebuah hamparan persegi yang pada komponen tengahnya terdapat motif garis berbentuk bintang segi delapan.
Seperti halnya menara di Masjid Nabawi, bagian dasar dari menara di Mesjid Kota Kinabalu ini mempunyai wujud kotak. Setelah dipisahkan dengan sebuah balkon, wujud menara berubah menjadi bentuk oktagonal. Tapi, adopsi format menara dari masjid ini tak secara mutlak mengarah pada gaya di Masjid Nabawi.
Pengaruh Eropa dan arsitektur Mughal rupanya tersirat juga pada menara mesjid ini. Ini kelihatan dari adanya pilar dan cupola pada komponen menara itu. Cupola ini ialah hiasan berupa menara kecil pada pucuk kubah yang berfungsi sebagai ventilasi sekaligus daerah masuknya sinar. Pada komponen teratas dari menara mesjid tersebut terdapat kubah berukuran kecil. Warna yang dipilih pada komponen kubah kecil ini selaras dengan warna yang terdapat pada kubah utama.
Kubah utama Mesjid Kota Kinabalu mempunyai pola bergaris dengan warna biru menyala yang tampak dominan. Sementara itu, untuk bentuk kubah masjid, nampak adanya dampak dari format kubah masjid-mesjid berarsitektur Persia yang tumbuh subur di wilayah Iran. Bentuknya menyerupai wujud umbi bawang. Tetapi, kubah yang ada pada Masjid Kinabalu ini tidak dihiasi secara masif keramik yang berwarna-warni layaknya
harga kubah masjid gaya Persia.
Dari nampak luar, mesjid hal yang demikian mempunyai warna putih yang dominan. Warna putih ini hampir mengisi seluruh komponen dinding bangunan masjid. Warna putih ini menjadi kelihatan kontras dengan warna kubahnya yang berwarna biru bermotif.
